Our English Tutoring Program

Vocabulary

Most students struggle to read because they don’t know vocabulary.

Vocabulary affects several areas of English:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Essay quality
  • SAT performance

By middle school, children should be mastering 10-20 new vocabulary words each week. This approach gives them the vocabulary they need to succeed in AP English Literature, AP English Language and Composition, on the SAT Reading and Writing section, and in college.

At Improve Your English, our vocabulary program is personalized, focused, and systematic.

  • Students learn 500 – 1,000 carefully selected vocabulary words each year.
  • Lessons begin with weekly quizzes and cumulative reviews
  • Custom vocabulary method teaches definition, usage, and memory clues

Our traditional approach to vocabulary helps students memorize words and remember them long-term.

Reading

Most students today aren’t reading deeply. They are skimming.

And many schools assign books that are too easy. Students finish them, but they don’t learn the deeper reading skills required for the SAT, AP English, or college-level reading.

At Improve Your English, our books help students develop their minds:

  • Classic literature that develops sophisticated thought
  • Weekly reading comprehension exercises
  • Deep discussion with a tutor who emphasizes understanding

Our students learn to read actively and develop deep insight. This approach helps them write stronger essays, especially in-class essays.

Grammar

Confused by the red marks on your child’s essays? Wondering why grammar isn’t emphasized as much in school today?

Knowing grammar is the foundation of strong writing.

Students who know grammar have many advantages:

  • More sophisticated sentences
  • No embarrassing grammatical errors
  • Higher grades on essays

Our systematic program makes learning grammar logical and easy to understand.

At Improve Your English, our students master core grammatical concepts:

  • Subjects and Verbs
  • Direct and Indirect Objects
  • Comma Splices
  • Adverb, Adjective, and Noun Clauses

Knowing this technical vocabulary helps students understand why certain sentences are correct.

If a tutor is only correcting papers, your child might get a higher grade—but not improve his skill.

By working with us, students improve their core skills so that they can earn A’s without outside assistance.

Writing

In school English classes, kids write too few essays. They have limited instruction and examples. And they receive too little feedback.

That’s because most English classes are simply too large for systematic essay instruction.

At Improve Your English, our students write an essay or a part of an essay each week. And each week, an expert writing tutor reviews your child’s writing.

We teach all forms of essay writing:

  • Expository
  • Persuasive
  • Analytical
  • Literary Analysis
  • Personal Narrative

And we teach students the key writing skills:

  • Develop a clear thesis
  • Organize paragraphs logically
  • Support claims with evidence
  • Eliminate vague or repetitive language

By the time our students encounter honors, AP, or college-level writing, they understand exactly how to organize their thoughts and express them clearly so that they can receive A’s on assessments.
